ProPaving Documentation

Learn how to measure parking lots and paved areas with precision.

01

Getting Started

Learn the basics of using ProPaving

Creating Your First Project

To create a new project:

1. Click "New Project" from the dashboard or projects page

2. Enter a project name (required)

3. Add an optional address for the location

4. Add any project notes

5. Click "Create Project"

Your project will be created and you'll be taken to the map view where you can start measuring.

Navigating the Map

The map interface has several key areas:

Map Canvas: The main satellite view where you draw measurements

Toolbar: Located at the top with drawing tools and actions

Properties Panel: Right side showing project details

Measurements Panel: Lists all your measurements with totals

Items Panel: Left side for organizing by category

Use your mouse or trackpad to pan and zoom the map. On mobile, use standard pinch-to-zoom gestures.

Address Search

Quickly navigate to any location:

1. Click the search icon in the toolbar

2. Type an address, city, or landmark

3. Select from the autocomplete suggestions

4. The map will center on that location

This uses Google Places for accurate address lookup.

Using Your Current Location

Click the "Locate Me" button (crosshair icon) in the toolbar to center the map on your current location. Your browser will ask for permission to access your location.

This is helpful when you're on-site at a project location.

02

Drawing Measurements

How to measure areas and lines

Drawing Area Measurements

To measure a paved area:

1. Click the "Draw Area" tool in the toolbar

2. Click on the map to place your first point

3. Continue clicking to add more points around the perimeter

4. Double-click to finish the shape

The area is calculated automatically in square feet. You can see the perimeter length as well.

Tips:

• Place points at corners and curves

• The more points, the more accurate the measurement

• You need at least 3 points to create an area

Drawing Linear Measurements

To measure a line (like striping or curbing):

1. Click the "Draw Line" tool in the toolbar

2. Click to place your starting point

3. Continue clicking to add more points along the line

4. Double-click to finish

The total length is calculated in linear feet.

Tips:

• Great for measuring striping, curbs, or crack sealing

• Each point creates a segment

• You need at least 2 points

Placing Count Markers

To count items like parking stalls or ADA spaces:

1. Select a count category from the Items Panel

2. Click "Add Marker" or the count tool

3. Click on the map to place numbered markers

4. Each marker gets a sequential number

Markers are organized by category for easy totaling.

Canceling a Drawing

If you make a mistake while drawing:

• Press the Escape key to cancel

• Or click the "Cancel" button (shown on mobile)

This will discard the current shape and return you to selection mode.

03

Cutouts & Islands

Subtract areas for islands and medians

Creating Cutouts

Cutouts allow you to subtract islands, medians, or buildings from an area measurement:

1. First, select an existing area measurement

2. Click the "Cut Out Area" button in the toolbar

3. Draw a polygon around the island/median

4. Double-click to finish

The cutout area is automatically subtracted from the parent measurement. The panel will show "X cutouts" to indicate how many you have.

Important:

• You must select an area first before cutting

• Cutouts must be completely inside the parent area

• You can add multiple cutouts to one area

Managing Cutouts

In the Measurements Panel, each area shows its cutout count. You can:

View cutouts: Expand the measurement to see individual cutouts

Delete cutouts: Click the trash icon on any cutout to remove it

Deleting a cutout will add that area back to the parent measurement total.

04

Intelligent Detection

Automatically detect paved areas

Using Auto-Detection

ProPaving can automatically detect paved areas:

1. Navigate to the area you want to measure

2. Zoom in so the parking lot fills most of the screen

3. Click the "Auto-detect Paved Area" button (sparkle icon)

4. Wait 10-15 seconds while the system analyzes the imagery

Results:

• The detected area will appear highlighted on the map

• A confidence score shows how certain the detection is

• Any detected islands will be shown as cutouts

Understanding Confidence Scores

Each detection includes a confidence score:

Green (80%+): High confidence - the detection is likely accurate

Yellow (60-79%): Moderate confidence - you may want to review and refine

Orange (<60%): Low confidence - consider manual tracing instead

The system also provides reasoning notes explaining what it detected.

Accepting, Refining, or Rejecting

After detection, you have three options:

Accept: Convert the detection directly to a saved measurement

Refine: Enter edit mode to adjust the vertices before saving

Reject: Clear the detection and try again or draw manually

If the confidence is low, the system will recommend manual tracing.

Tips for Better Detection

For best results:

Zoom level matters: Zoom in so the parking lot fills 60-80% of the view

Clear imagery: Detection works best with recent, high-resolution satellite imagery

Simple shapes: Complex lots with many islands may need refinement

Good contrast: Lots with clear boundaries between pavement and landscaping work best

05

Managing Measurements

Edit, organize, and delete measurements

Renaming Measurements

To rename a measurement:

1. Find it in the Measurements Panel or Items Panel

2. Double-click on the name, or click the edit (pencil) icon

3. Type the new name

4. Press Enter to save, or Escape to cancel

Good naming helps organize your project: "Main Lot", "Drive Lane", "ADA Spaces", etc.

Changing Colors

Each measurement can have its own color for visual distinction:

1. Click the color indicator next to the measurement

2. Choose from 8 preset colors: Blue, Green, Amber, Red, Purple, Pink, Teal, Orange

3. The color updates immediately on the map

Use different colors to distinguish areas by type (parking, drive lanes, sidewalks).

Showing/Hiding Measurements

Toggle visibility to declutter your map:

• Click the eye icon next to any measurement to hide it

• Click again to show it

• Hidden measurements still count toward totals

This is useful when you have many overlapping measurements.

Locking Measurements

Lock measurements to prevent accidental edits:

• Click the lock icon next to a measurement

• Locked measurements cannot be moved or edited

• Click again to unlock

Lock your finished measurements before working on new ones.

Deleting Measurements

To delete a measurement:

1. Select the measurement on the map or in the panel

2. Press the Delete key, or click the trash icon

3. Confirm the deletion in the dialog

Warning: Deletion cannot be undone. Make sure you want to remove it.

To clear all measurements at once, use the "Clear All" (eraser) button in the toolbar.

06

Categories & Organization

Organize measurements by type

Understanding Categories

Categories help you organize measurements by type:

Category Types:

Area: For square footage measurements (parking lots, drive lanes)

Linear: For linear feet measurements (striping, curbing)

Count: For counting items (stalls, ADA spaces, markers)

Each category has a name, color, and unit of measurement.

Using the Items Panel

The Items Panel (left sidebar) organizes measurements by category:

Expand/collapse categories by clicking the header

See totals for each category

Grand totals at the bottom show overall Area, Linear, and Count totals

Rename items inline by double-clicking

Change colors by clicking the color indicator

Managing Categories

Company admins can manage categories in Settings > Company:

Create new categories with custom names and colors

Edit existing category names

Delete categories (measurements will be uncategorized)

Set units for display (SF, LF, etc.)

Categories are shared across all projects in your company.

07

Project Management

ProPaving automatically saves your work:

• Changes are saved within 2 seconds of any edit

• Look for "Auto-saving..." indicator when changes are being saved

• Your viewport position (map center and zoom) is also saved

• No need to manually save while working

Manual Save

You can also manually save at any time:

• Click the "Save" button in the toolbar or project header

• This creates a checkpoint of your current work

• Useful before making major changes
