How Much Asphalt Do I Need?

The Short Answer

Asphalt tonnage = (area_sq_ft × depth_ft × density_lb_per_ft³) ÷ 2,000.

For most jobs, plug in 145 lb/ft³ for hot-mix asphalt and add a 5% waste contingency. A 1,000 sq ft driveway at 2 inches deep comes out to about 12.7 tons — roughly $1,460 in material at the April 2026 national-average $115/ton.

The Three Numbers You Need

To calculate asphalt tonnage you need three inputs: area, depth, and density.

1. Area (square feet)

For a rectangular driveway or lot, multiply length × width. For irregular shapes — and most real driveways and parking lots have curves, islands, and odd corners — break the area into rectangles and triangles, or use a tool like ProPaving to draw the area on satellite imagery and get the exact square footage automatically.

2. Depth (inches → feet)

Standard depths by application:

• Residential driveway: 2 inches of asphalt over a 4-6 inch compacted aggregate base
• Light commercial parking lot: 3 inches
• Heavy-duty parking lot or roadway: 4-6 inches, sometimes in two lifts (binder course plus surface course)

The formula uses depth in feet, not inches. Convert by dividing inches by 12. Two inches becomes 0.1667 feet.

3. Density (pounds per cubic foot)

If your supplier hasn’t given you a specific number, use these defaults:

• Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA): 145 lb/ft³ — standard for new commercial and residential paving
• Cold Mix: 140 lb/ft³ — patches and temporary repairs
• Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP): 138 lb/ft³ — driveways, parking lots, base layers at lower cost

For large jobs ask your supplier for the specific unit weight. A 5 lb/ft³ density difference on a 100,000 sq ft job moves the tonnage by roughly 17 tons — real money at $115/ton.

Worked Example

Project: 5,000 sq ft commercial parking lot at 3 inches deep with hot-mix asphalt.

1. Convert depth: 3 in ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft
2. Cubic feet: 5,000 × 0.25 = 1,250 ft³
3. Pounds: 1,250 × 145 = 181,250 lb
4. Tons (before waste): 181,250 ÷ 2,000 = 90.625 tons
5. Tons (with 5% waste): 90.625 × 1.05 = 95.16 tons
6. Material cost at $115/ton: 95.16 × $115 = $10,943

Why the 5% Waste Contingency

Asphalt is sold by weight in delivered loads, and contractors round up to avoid running short mid-pour. The 5% standard contingency covers compaction, spillage, edges, and rounding to the next delivery quantity. Adjust upward to 7-10% for irregular shapes or jobs with lots of edges and tight corners.

Asphalt Cost in 2026

Material only: Hot-mix asphalt averages $110-$125 per ton nationally. Regional ranges:

• Southeast / Texas: $80-$135/ton
• Southwest: $85-$115/ton
• Midwest: $90-$120/ton
• Mountain: $95-$130/ton
• West Coast: $100-$140/ton
• Northeast / California: $130-$180/ton

Installed (with labor): $3-$8 per square foot for commercial parking lots, $7-$15 per square foot for residential driveways. The spread depends on region, base prep needs, and job size — small driveways carry higher per-foot prices because mobilization is a fixed cost.
